Youth Justice Network (formerly Friends of Island Academy) supports young people whose lives intersect with New York City’s jails and justice system through individualized advocacy and neighborhood-based mentorship. Across all our services and programs: career workshops, HSE classes, Arts & Culture initiatives, and more—our underlying purpose has been to strengthen opportunity and level the playing field for justice-involved youth between the ages of 16-24. Friends of the Arts is a mobile mural project that will be created and displayed in public park(s) in Brooklyn, with a focus in Brownsville, East New York, and Downtown Brooklyn. The goal is that this mural will act as a catalyst for our Brooklyn youth members to celebrate, engage, and inform their neighborhoods. This mural will represent the people and core values of Youth Justice Network, and uses art as a vehicle for healing, healthy self-expression, and communication in a time of isolation. Strengthening community bonds and celebrating stories builds confidence and stability, and introduces justice-involved young people to career, education, wellness, creative, and social opportunities.
