Grant Year: 2021
Location: Park Slope

PROUD VOICES is an audio festival invites New Yorkers to wander through the iconically queer Park Slope, experiencing audio work by LGBTQIA+ artists from Brooklyn.

PROUD VOICES: An Audio Festival is a socially conscious way of experiencing the work of queer artists in Brooklyn and supporting small businesses, while remaining socially distant. Audience members are encouraged to wear a mask as they follow our map to make their way around the festival at their own pace, safely and in control of their experience. Audio tracks will be available 24 hours a day, accessed by scanning a QR code in the window of each of our participating businesses marked on the map. The map to the festival will also be available online, allowing audience members to experience it from home.

Inspired by Pride's inception at the 1969 Stonewall Riots, the inaugural PROUD VOICES in 2020 honored the legacy of the Black queer folks that led the way. We invited participants to take a walk around the queerly iconic West Village in New York City, discovering a unique audio track by a BIPOC LGBTQIA+ artist at each listening location marked on our digital map.

In 2021 we are collaborating internationally and touring PROUD VOICES to Austin, TX (April) and Auckland, NZ (May) before finishing in Brooklyn, NY (June). Follow @ButchMermaid on Instagram to get the full experience!
