Afterthought is a feature-length documentary in production. Our film tells two interwoven stories of artists creating memorials to COVID-19 and the lives it cut short. Following a devastating personal loss, Laura Taylor works to develop a memorial to her closest childhood friend, incorporating oil paintings, old letters, and childhood toys. At the same time, with the pandemic still ongoing, Rochelle Riley collaborates with artists, community leaders, and individual families to create a healing memorial for the City of Detroit. In documenting these two women and their art, Afterthought commemorates individuals lost and communities changed by the pandemic and asks universal questions about memory, trauma, and healing.
