Garba in Brooklyn: a Navaratri Performance and Festival, will take place in October 2023, for one night during the Navaratri holiday. Navaratri is a nine-night festival originally celebrated in India to honor the Hindu Goddess, Durga. This lively event will kick off with a dance concert by Alisha Desai and her fellow dancers who will highlight different styles of Indian dance, and will feature the premiere of a Garba performance piece exploring the fiercness and grace of Shakti, or the female divine. Garba is the Gujarati folk dance traditonally 'played' during this holiday. Following the concert, Alisha will lead a Garba and Dandiya Raas workshop, so that quests can join in the fun! The evening will conclude with all attendees celebrating and dancing together accompanied by live Dhol Drum. Through out the evening, guest will be able to enjoy refreshments and check out a pop-up visual arts gallery.
