Dishman + Co. Choreography presents Belly, an evening-length contemporary dance work, collaboratively choreographed by Artistic Director Elizabeth Dishman and 6 dance artists: Larissa Asebedo, Tony Gonzales, Mary Lyn Graves, Nadia Halim, Owen Prum, and Julie Seal. Belly is named for the intimate space that draws together different individual elements to nourish and delight a complex body. In digesting diverse elements, the whole body made up of many parts becomes cohesive and energized to move fluidly through a complicated world. Belly processes this bodily truth artistically in an evening-length contemporary dance work, presented in 2 parts: Part 1 engages Bach’s “Solo Violin Sonata No. 2 in A minor,” performed live by Adrian Ong. Artistic Director Elizabeth Dishman and 6 co-creating dance artists reframe this music’s turbulent, poignant lines and fleeting resolutions as a relationally-charged contemporary dialogue between singular physical voices. For Part 2, Atlanta-based cellist-composer Okorie Johnson has composed a new experimental sound score for the existing choreography, revitalizing the creative dialogue through his distinct voice and building a new sound space in which to digest the dance. This cumulative listening process nourishes a complex, communalized dialogue that grows and energizes the dance and co-creating body of artists.
