The Migrating Octopus integrates textile art, fashion design, and storytelling to explore migration and artisanal communities, emphasizing the dynamic evolution of identities and cultures. Asmaa Amadou, alongside her women’s wear fashion brand “asmaa”, explores this interplay through research and crafting techniques such as fabric dyeing, printing, needlework, and garment construction. Inspired by indigenous and contemporary influences, and collaborating with craft artisans, the project aims to serve as a visual art narrative to highlight ancient African civilizations through storytelling and theater and performance arts. Envisioned as a gallery exhibition, The Migrating Octopus combines visual art installation with a fashion collection, with each design named after ancient African kingdoms. This fusion of storytelling, textile art, fashion, and history aims to provide an engaging educational experience. Drawing from African myths and symbolism, the project weaves past and present, narrating tales of cultural evolution and personal identity. By merging traditional craft knowledge with modern technology, it conveys the rich narrative, roots, myths, and migration stories inherent in Black identity.
