Kizuna Dance

The Open Intensive
Artistic Discipline: Dance
Category: Brooklyn Arts Fund
Grant Year: 2024
Location: Downtown Brooklyn

Created in response to the high prices of dance classes and intensives in NYC, Kizuna Dance's Open Intensive offers the NYC dance community a week of completely free contemporary floorwork workshops. Open to pre-professional, professional, and recreational dancers, the Open Intensive strips away requirements such as tuition fees, video submissions, and resumes to create a financially accessible space for artists to connect, collaborate, train, experiment, and experience Kizuna Dance’s repertory and its idiosyncratic mix of contemporary floorwork, streetdance, and capoeira at no cost. Two daily workshops (10am - 1pm and 2pm - 5pm) are taught by Artistic Director Cameron McKinney and Kizuna Dance company members across five days at the Mark Morris Dance Center. Participants can register for up to any two technique sessions. For example, you may register for a morning session on Monday and an afternoon session on Friday, a morning and afternoon technique session on the same day, or just one session. All sessions throughout the week are open to any and all movers. The Open Intensive encourages dancers who are ready to be challenged to use these sessions as free opportunities to explore and expand their own movement practice.
