The Drum and the Seed, a neo-folktale set in Haiti in the not-too-distant future, will raise ecological consciousness via shadow puppet theater, complete with puppeteers, actors (for voice-overs), and musicians. The tale elicits an ecological theme from core Haitian values that inspire people to activism around the environment and environmental justice. In the story a young girl journeys to the House of the Spirit of Death for magic seeds that will revive her drought-afflicted community. Along the way she meets a magic bird guide and three nature spirits who explain their predicaments and give her secrets for obtaining the seeds. We won’t spoil the ending, except to say that what she learns is quite unexpected.
