"Mookntaka's Friends and Follies: Plobble"
Artistic Discipline: Interdisciplinary
Category: Brooklyn Arts Fund
Grant Year: 2024
Location: Gowanus

Mookntaka's Friends and Follies are a cast of inflatable sculptures who wander around the city to create pop-up public art installations. Whether it be a moment crossing the street or catching waves at the beach, the Friends and Follies enjoy finding the perfect spot to rest, play, and offer a moment of respite from everyday routine. When they’re ready, the Friends and Follies roll up and mosey along to the next location. The latest addition to our collection is Plobble, a playful stack of baubles that gently sways with the wind. Joyful and bouncy on the outside, Plobble invites visitors inside to experience a serene space, offering a brief escape from the everyday. This summer, Plobble will be popping up in public spaces around Brooklyn, including Gowanus, Park Slope, Red Hook, and more! Mookntaka (MOO-kin-tah-kah) is a Brooklyn-based artist duo by Mark Zlotsky and Karyn Lao. It combines our names through the voice of our two-year-old niece: Mook (Uncle Mark) and Taka (Auntie Karyn). Mookntaka personifies the whimsical lens we investigate our surroundings with. It serves as a reminder to find joy in unexpected places and to embrace the silliness and curiosity of our inner child.
