One Breath Rising, Inc.
One Breath Rising's "Brooklyn – Looking Back, Looking Ahead" provides a chance to celebrate the legacies of jazz masters Sun Ra and Elmo Hope while looking ahead to celebrate the artistry of their living proteges, Ahmed Abdullah, and Bertha Hope. We are particularly thrilled to help trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah celebrate the publication of his memoir, “A Strange Celestial Road: My Time in the Sun Ra Arkestra” with a reading and performance. Saco Myoji, a Japanese-born, New York-based composer, lyricist, singer, keyboardist, Mbira player and former saxophonist, brings the women’s choir, As It Is, to combine elements of traditional Japanese and African music with jazz as well as dance. Master pianist, Bertha Hope has been a dynamic force in improvised music since the 1960s. Her concert will culminate a yearlong centennial celebration of the birth of her late husband, Elmo Hope, who was one of the creators of the Bebop piano sound (alongside his more famous companions, Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk).
