Adrienne Westwood Projects

"box/truck" is a transient performance within and surrounding a 16-foot box truck that contemplates heritage, assimilation, and “home.” Using the stories of her maternal grandparents’ assimilation as the children of Jewish immigrants, writer and director Adrienne Westwood, together with a small, multi-talented ensemble, creates a portal of exploration into the (un)told stories of inheritance: the stories-behind-the-stories. A circus troupe sets up a tent and ring, an ancestor cooks soup, a child bottle-feeds baby lions, a family journeys the ocean on a boat, a woman contemplates the moon: box/truck weaves delicate layers of movement, story, song, puppetry, and video to invite an individual-yet-collective contemplation and complication of inheritance.

These have played an important part in her upbringing and are an integral part of Mistry’s art-making.

The Aarti Hindu Lamp Ceremony (AHLC) began after Hurricane Sandy. In the Hindu practice, lighting of a lamp symbolizes life, and the river is respected as a mother. During the AHLC, participants connect with the river with decorated lamps. Many ceremonies in India have an inherent art making element and involve community participation. Most art-forms in Indian Hindu culture originated as ritual devotion to the Divine; art and rituals are interrelated. During her childhood, Mistry celebrated AHLC with her family and community.

'Aarti' Hindu Lamp Ceremony is a tradition connected with rivers and performed at dawn and dusk at the banks of a river. In India and Hindu tradition, the river is revered as Mother that nutures and provides sustenance. A lit lamp signifies life in Hindu tradition and is used to mark a begining of a ceremony. Lighting of lamp also signifies removal of negative tendencies to purify our hearts. Participants make connection with river, pond or a water body by placing hand decorated palm leaf lit lamps in the river for peace and harmony. The palm leaf lamps are hand decorated using natural ceremony colors. This ceremony engages the community in collective art making. This ceremony will be performed at the banks of East River, Pebble Beach, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Dumbo in the month of August 2023. Date will be announce shortly. Please follow up and sign up on FB or Instagram for details.
